Where the letter grade system came from

Method 2: flat bonus points
This looks identical to the mean-curve method mechanically (everyone gets the same fixed number of points added), but the intent and the number chosen are different: rather than targeting a specific class average, the instructor picks a flat bonus based on how many points the hardest question or two turned out to be worth versus intended — for example, adding a flat 5 points to every student's score to compensate for one particularly ambiguous question, regardless of what that does to the resulting class average.
Method 3: scaling to the top score
This method treats the highest raw score in the class as the new 100% and rescales every other score proportionally against it, rather than adding a flat amount to everyone. If the top score in the class was a 92% and a particular student scored 78% raw, their curved score becomes:

Why international grading scales differ so much
