The standard published APGAR score (Apgar V, "A proposal for a new method of evaluation of the newborn infant", Curr Res Anesth Analg 1953;32(4):260-267): 5 criteria — Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respiration — each scored 0, 1, or 2, summed to a total of 0-10, assessed at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth. This is a real, standard, universally-taught newborn assessment tool. This calculator performs the descriptive summation only — it is for general reference and educational purposes only, and is not a substitute for actual APGAR scoring performed by attending clinical staff in the delivery room.
How it works
Select a score of 0, 1, or 2 for each of the 5 criteria, at both 1 minute and 5 minutes. The tool sums each set of 5 scores to give a total out of 10 for each time point.
- Enter appearance / color (1 min) — 0=blue/pale, 1=body pink extremities blue, 2=all pink.
- Enter pulse / heart rate (1 min) — 0=absent, 1=<100 bpm, 2=>=100 bpm.
