A golf handicap differential measures how a single round compares to a course's difficulty, independent of which course you played.
This calculator finds the handicap differential for a round, plus a simplified single-round handicap index estimate.
How it works
Enter your score, the course rating, and the slope rating (found on the scorecard or course website). The calculator applies the World Handicap System differential formula \(\text{Differential} = \dfrac{(\text{Score} - \text{Course Rating}) \times 113}{\text{Slope Rating}}\).
- Enter your score (gross strokes).
- Enter course rating.
- Enter slope rating (55–155, default 113).
- Click Calculate to see your results.
Examples
Score 90, rating 71.5, slope 113
Shooting a 90 on a course with a 71.5 rating and standard 113 slope gives a handicap differential of 18.5, and a single-round estimated handicap of about 17.8.
Who should use it
- Getting a quick sense of your handicap after a single round.
- Understanding how course difficulty (rating and slope) factors into a handicap calculation.
Industry applications
- Recreational and competitive golf
- Golf course and club management
Advantages
- Uses the same core differential formula as the official World Handicap System.
- Quick single-round estimate without needing a full round history.
Limitations
- Not an official, certified handicap index — those require multiple rounds and a governing body's system.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the course rating from a different set of tees than the one you actually played.
- Treating a single-round estimate as an official, USGA-certified handicap index.
Best practices
- For an accurate handicap, track differentials across multiple rounds — a single round is heavily affected by an unusually good or bad day.
Tips
- Track your differential after every round — an official handicap index uses your best 8 of your last 20 rounds, so consistency matters more than any single score.
