Recipes from different countries specify oven temperature in different systems — Fahrenheit in the US, Celsius in most of the rest of the world, and Gas Mark on UK gas ovens.
This converter switches between all three, using the standard gas mark equivalence chart found in most cookbooks.
How it works
Enter a temperature and choose the unit you're converting from and to. Fahrenheit and Celsius convert using the standard formula; Gas Mark uses the conventional UK oven equivalence chart, rounding to the nearest standard mark when converting to Gas Mark.
- Enter value.
- Enter from.

Examples
A standard baking temperature
350°F equals 176.7°C and corresponds to Gas Mark 4 — a common baking temperature for cakes and cookies.
A hot oven for roasting
220°C equals 428°F, closest to Gas Mark 7 on a UK gas oven.
Who should use it
- Converting a UK recipe's Gas Mark setting to Fahrenheit for a US oven.
- Converting a US recipe's Fahrenheit temperature to Celsius for an oven with a metric dial.
Industry applications
- Home baking and cooking
- International recipe adaptation and publishing
Advantages
- Supports all three major oven temperature systems in one tool.
- Rounds sensibly to the nearest real gas mark instead of showing a meaningless fractional value.
Limitations
- Does not account for the fan/convection oven temperature adjustment some recipes recommend.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a conventional oven temperature setting for a fan/convection oven without adjusting it down slightly.
- Assuming Gas Mark scales linearly with Fahrenheit — the relationship is close but not perfectly linear at every mark.
Best practices
- When following a recipe from a different country, convert the stated oven temperature before preheating, rather than guessing an equivalent setting.
Tips
- If your oven runs hot or cool compared to its dial (common with older ovens), use an inexpensive oven thermometer to verify the actual temperature after converting.
