The same digit, "3", is worth 3 in the number 13, but worth 300 in the number 4327 and 3,000,000 in the number 3,451,209 — the position entirely determines the magnitude, which is the foundational insight of the base-10 place value system every other arithmetic skill builds on. Understanding place value is one of the earliest and most important concepts in elementary mathematics, since it underlies everything from basic addition and subtraction (which rely on lining up matching place values) to reading and writing large numbers correctly. How it works

Counting positions from the right starting at 1 (the ones place), 2 (the tens place), 3 (the hundreds place), and so on, the tool identifies the digit sitting at the requested position. That digit's place value is then computed by multiplying the digit by 10 raised to the power of (position − 1) — for example, a digit at position 3 (the hundreds place) is multiplied by 10² = 100, since each position to the left represents ten times the value of the position before it.
