STOP-BANG is a standard, widely used 8-item yes/no screening questionnaire for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) risk — Chung F et al., "STOP questionnaire: a tool to screen patients for obstructive sleep apnea", Anesthesiology, 2008. Each "yes" answer scores 1 point, for a total of 0-8, classified as low, intermediate, or high risk. This is a screening tool that flags a need for further sleep evaluation — it is not a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. Consult a doctor or sleep specialist for an actual diagnosis.
How it works
Answer yes/no to each of the 8 STOP-BANG items: Snoring, Tiredness, Observed apnea, Pressure (high blood pressure), BMI over 35, Age over 50, Neck circumference over 40cm, and male Gender. The tool sums the "yes" answers and classifies the risk level.
- Enter snoring (loud snoring, heard through closed doors).
- Enter tiredness (often feeling tired, fatigued, or sleepy during the day).
- Enter observed apnea (anyone has observed you stop breathing during sleep).
- Enter pressure (do you have or are you being treated for high blood pressure).
- Enter bMI more than 35 kg/m².
- Enter age over 50 years.
- Enter neck circumference greater than 40cm.
- Enter gender: male.

Examples
A score of 4
Falls in the "intermediate risk" band (3-4).
Who should use it
- Self-screening for obstructive sleep apnea risk before a doctor visit.
- Pre-surgical or general health screening questionnaires.
Industry applications
- Sleep medicine and diagnostics
- Pre-operative anesthesia screening
Advantages
- Widely validated, standard published screening questionnaire used in clinical practice.
- Quick to complete — just 8 yes/no questions.
Limitations
- A screening tool, not a diagnostic test on its own.
- Self-reported answers can be imprecise, particularly for items like observed apnea.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating a high STOP-BANG score as a confirmed OSA diagnosis rather than a signal for further evaluation.
- Answering the BMI or neck circumference items without actually checking current measurements.
Best practices
- If your score falls in the intermediate or high risk band, discuss it with a doctor, who may recommend a formal sleep study.
Tips
- Bring your STOP-BANG score to a doctor visit as a starting point for discussing whether a sleep study is warranted.
