How it works

The calculation mirrors the gas-trip-cost calculation with electricity units substituted in. First, kilowatt-hours needed = trip distance ÷ vehicle efficiency (miles per kWh) — this tells you how much energy the trip will consume from the battery. Second, total cost = kWh needed × price per kWh. Because the relationship is linear, doubling the distance doubles the cost (all else equal), and a more efficient vehicle (higher miles/kWh) proportionally reduces the kWh needed and therefore the total cost.
