How it works
The calculation has two steps. First, gallons needed = trip distance ÷ vehicle fuel economy (miles per gallon, MPG) — this tells you how much fuel the trip will consume. Second, total cost = gallons needed × price per gallon at the pump. The result scales linearly: double the distance and you double the fuel cost (all else equal), while a more fuel-efficient vehicle (higher MPG) proportionally lowers gallons needed and therefore total cost.
